It can be so exciting booking your plane ticket and waiting for the day arrive that you will be going to see a new place. But here are some tips before you depart..
1. Do your research.
A lot of time can be wasted if you don’t do your research properly. When booking your hotel, always look that you are near public transport. Also, sometimes if you go 1 or 2 srreets back or even one zone away from the centre of a city, you can save a lot of money. Read the hotel reviews, always click in to “see more” As on the landing page they only show you the best reviews. Try to book tours and museums online.
Pack lightly. I cannot reiterate this enough. Especially if you will be moving around a lot. Just make sure you have essential items, the rest can be bought. Especially if you are going somewhere with great shopping. You don’t want to have a heavy backpack, or trying to fight with your suitcase to get it closed.
3. Do at least one trip solo in your life
Navigating a city by yourself will teach you so much about yourself. It will force you out of your comfort zone and allows you the freedom to make up your mind entirely about where you want to go. Sometimes things won’t go as planned and that’s okay. But that’s what makes it so exciting.
4. Get travel insurance
Please make sure to secure travel insurance. This just will help with flight delays, baggage loss or missed connections. A lot of credit cards offer travel insurance if you book on them so look into that before you book your flights. There are also external providers of travel insurance which are quite affordable.
5. Have at least one pair of comfortable shoes
In most cases you will be doing a LOT of walking. Do not think that your haviaanas are going to make the cut. Invest in a good pair of walking shoes that supports your ankle and sole. Trust me after years of travelling and making this mistake numerous times I would say this should be top priority.
6. Lastly have fun
Do not worry about having a set schedule. Sure have a list in mind of highlights you want to see, but allow yourself to go with the flow. After all, some of the best adventures happen this way.
